St. Maarten's safety is acknowledged even by the US State Department, which classifies the island as a safe destination. As anywhere, simply don't do things here you wouldn't do at home. You'll often see simple homes right next to luxury condos — a sign of how peaceful the community is.
Sensible precautions
- Don't flash expensive jewelry or large amounts of cash, especially in less affluent areas; locals don't appreciate boasting.
- Everyone can tell you're driving a rental — usually an advantage, as drivers cut you slack. Occasionally hustlers target visitors when parking; just send them off politely.
- Never leave anything in your rental car — not even trash — to prevent break-ins.
On the road
Drive on the right. Speed limits are 50 km/h on the Dutch side and up to 70 km/h on a few French-side roads. In the busy November–April season, heavy traffic means you won't be speeding anyway.
