Gas stations are found across both sides of the island, every few kilometers, and some — like the SOL in Simpson Bay — are open 24 hours. Prices are shown per liter, not per gallon.
Watch the currency on the pump
- Dutch side: prices are in Caribbean Guilders (XCG), even if a '$' shows. The fixed rate is XCG 1.80 = USD 1.00 — don't pay the displayed number in dollars. All stations accept USD and convert for you.
- French side: prices are in Euro, but many stations let you pay in dollars and you can save up to 20%. Pay by credit card and you'll be charged in Euro.
- Cards are only accepted for purchases above about USD 15, so bring cash or look for an ATM.
Tips for island driving
Refuel before the tank gets low — tropical conditions sometimes mean a little water at the bottom of station tanks. Note that many station air compressors are out of order, so if you get a flat, don't keep driving on it; a can of Fix-a-Flat from any supermarket is a handy temporary fix.
