Drive the island's roads and you'll meet well-fed stray dogs, herds of unsupervised goats, the occasional cow strolling the highway, and — if you're lucky — a family of monkeys at an intersection. It can look like chaos, but the animals are remarkably road-smart and rarely need human help to cross safely.
Sharing the road
If a dog seems distracted, a quick honk alerts it to your car. Young goats are shepherded by experienced leaders who'll sometimes stop traffic for the group. The two exceptions that struggle with cars are cats and iguanas — the latter love sunbathing on warm asphalt, so watch for them.
Many strays live feral in packs rather than as anyone's pet. The Animal Welfare Foundation, working with local vets, traps and sterilizes them free of charge and feeds known packs daily — a humane program that has helped limit the stray population.
